EMERGENT
LITERACY
What is
Emergent Literacy?
Emergent literacy refers to the early foundational skills and behaviours that children develop before they can actually read and write conventionally. These skills include understanding that spoken language can be represented in written form, recognizing letters and their sounds, and comprehending the purpose of reading and writing.

Emergent literacy is crucial because it sets the stage for a child's future reading and writing abilities. Strong emergent literacy skills are predictive of later academic success, as they provide the building blocks necessary for effective reading and writing development. Encouraging and supporting emergent literacy in young children helps foster a love for reading, enhances language development, and prepares them for a lifetime of successful learning.
Why is it important ?
PREDICTABLE CHART WRITING
Predictable Chart Writing is a teaching strategy used in special education and early childhood education to support the development of literacy skills, including reading and writing. It is an interactive and collaborative approach that helps students, particularly those with diverse learning needs, build their language and communication abilities.

INDEPENDENT READING
Independent reading encourages students with special needs to read on their own, without direct guidance or intervention, to develop their reading skills, and appreciation for pictures/details and foster a love for reading. Independent reading is an important component of literacy instruction, and it can be adapted to meet the unique needs and abilities of students with disabilities.

SHARED READING
Shared reading is an instructional approach commonly used in special education and early childhood settings to support the development of reading skills and foster language development in students with diverse learning needs. It is a collaborative reading experience in which a teacher or educator reads a book or text aloud to a group of students, and the students actively participate in the reading process.
